Advanced Services at home - our ninth Partnership Roundtable in Birmingham



Last week, we held our ninth Roundtable for the Advanced Services Partnership. Taking place three times a year, the Roundtables are a key feature of the Advanced Services Partnership. They bring together our research team and partner companies to share the latest findings of our research and gain insights into the practical implementation of advanced services at their own companies.

With our hometown of Birmingham as our base, we spent each of the three days at a different company with a full programme of talks, interactive hands-on workshops and tours of our hosts’ facilities.

Day 1 was hosted by our partner company Ishida, a global manufacturer of food weighing and packaging machinery and equipment. Highlight of the day was a practical workshop on how storytelling can be used for stakeholder acquisition and the building of an effective internal coalition to foster the adoption of advanced services.

We spent Day 2 at JCB and were fortunate to receive a tour of their Uptime Centre in action. It is the beating heart of JCB’s LiveLink software.


Built to secure JCB machinery against theft, LiveLink offers remote machine monitoring and management capabilities to customers. It is key to JCB’s advanced services offer.

Another highlight of the day was the keynote by Mike Hulme, Alstom UK’s Managing Director Trains and Modernisation. Mike not only shared his insights of Alstom’s advanced services, but also a look to future developments to enhance their offering to customers like Virgin Trains and Transport for London.

Our visit to Rolls Royce on Day 3 included tours of their Innovation Lab and Availability Centre, as well as an open discussion of advanced services with their Services and Digital teams. As early adopters of advanced services, the teams shared their vast experience of delivering advanced services and answered many practical questions around implementation, digitisation and data, business model transformation and deriving monetary value from services.
